2024 Brandberg Backyard Ultra Event Report

This past weekend, the tranquil town of Uis came alive with the energy and determination of ultra-runners from all over as they gathered for the 2024 Brandberg Backyard Ultra. The event, held from August 2 to 5, saw a record-breaking number of participants and some truly outstanding performances.

Race Highlights

The event kicked off at 8 am on a cool, wind-still morning at the Brandberg Rest Camp, which hosted the race village. Runners were thankful for the cooler conditions and a slight breeze that picked up later in the day. A total of 139 runners entered the race: 53 for the full ultra, 53 for the challenge (up to 6 laps), and 32 for the fun run (1 lap). A complete list of results of the ultra race can be found HERE.

In true backyard ultra fashion, runners had to complete a 6.7 km lap every hour, starting a new lap at the top of each hour. The last person to keep running without missing a lap would be crowned the winner.

The Men

  • André Ross once again proved his dominance by being the last person standing with 22 laps (147 km), breaking the previous course record of 20 laps. His incredible stamina and perseverance earned him the top spot for the third consecutive year.
  • PC Visser pushed hard and completed 21 laps (141 km) before conceding, securing the second place.
  • Johan Bronkhorst came in third with an impressive 20 laps (134 km).
  • Erich Goeieman followed with 18 laps (121 km).
  • Milton Kimbini completed 13 laps (87 km).

The Women

  • The women’s field was exceptionally strong this year. Corne Verwey shattered the previous female course record by completing 16 laps (107 km), making her the new record holder.
  • Both Danielle Zimny and Renata Stolze also broke the previous record, each completing 15 laps (100 km).
  • Winnie Mukupuki finished with 13 laps (87 km).
  • Zena Vorster managed 9 laps (60 km).

The atmosphere at the Brandberg Rest Camp was vibrant and supportive, with volunteers, supporters, and fellow runners cheering each other on. The camaraderie and spirit of the ultra-running community were on full display throughout the event.

Brandberg Challenge and Fun Run Highlights

The 2024 Brandberg Backyard Ultra was not just a race, it was a testament to endurance and community spirit. Participants faced the challenge of completing up to six 6.607 km laps of the demanding BBU course, while others joined in the fun run, embracing the camaraderie with a single lap. Notably, the event celebrated remarkable achievements, including those of Alna Louw and Frieda Blignaut. Both at the age of 74, Alna Louw, who began her running journey at 70, and Frieda Blignaut, who impressively completed four laps of the course, inspired everyone with their determination and vitality. Adding to the spirit of inclusivity, the youngest participant in the fun run was just 7 years old, showcasing that age is no barrier to participation and enjoyment.

Auction and Charitable Initiatives:

We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s online charity auction was a resounding success, raising an impressive total of N$145,250 over just three days on our WhatsApp group! The diverse range of enticing items and exclusive experiences up for bid captivated our generous participants.

It was truly the outstanding efforts of our environmental conservation groups that inspired their contributions, complemented by the exquisite items graciously provided by our event partners. The results were remarkable, with Day 1 generating N$66,300, Day 2 contributing N$43,550, and Day 3 adding N$35,400 to our cause. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who participated and supported our conservation initiatives—your generosity makes a profound difference!
